Campus students no longer have to be smart or hardworking to get A’s in their exams. In fact, a good number don’t even sit for exams but curiously still emerge tops in their preferred units, writes Mercy Njoki in The Daily Nation.
And the techniques that have been devised and perfected for getting the magical grades vary according to the gender of the student, the character of the lecturer and the financial muscle of the students. Payment is also done either in cash or in kind.
Some female students, it turns out, easily earn themselves a straight ‘A’ in their respective course units after a night out with the compromised lecturer after which the student simply sends her registration details via email or text and the deal is done. Their male counterparts apparently have no option but fork out money. And for figures in the range of Ksh 3,000 to 5,000, they are assured of a clean ‘A’.
A good number of female students too, it is reported, prefer to pay on cash basis like the male comrades.
At the same time, enterprising students with a knack for making an extra coin have also taken to recording and selling lecture notes and audio tapes to their comrades who are too busy working to attend classes. These go for Ksh 100 to Ksh 200 for the notes, while the recorded lectures retail at between Ksh 150 to Ksh 250.
It should not come as a surprise that many students are now adept at turning up for continuous assessment tests (CATs) and exams while the rush for classes is no longer a worry to students. Little wonder half-baked graduates who are the result of this system are simply following in the footsteps of their lecturers.
