Consultancy Opportunity to Develop a Marketing Strategy for Fairtrade-Certified Coffee Grown and Processed by Kenyan Women Farmers

  • We raise awareness on trade justice by drawing attention to the concerns producers face Part of our work includes designing programmes to work with Fairtrade producer groups on strategic issues, including contributing to the development of international funding bids.


Overview of opportunity:

Fairtrade Africa is part of a consortium of organsiations bidding for funding from the Big Lottery Fund, a prominent UK-based funder.


Our project seeks to work with women farmers in Kipkelion Union – a collection of coffee cooperatives in Kericho County, west of the Kenyan Rift Valley that is Fairtrade-certified;


Our project will support the women farmers into income earning positions and provide marketing support for the sale of their Fairtrade-certified coffee.


We seek the input of a consultant to lead the development of this marketing strategy which will explore the routes afforded by the sale of branded/packaged or green bean coffee to:



  • Local government procurers, under the Kenya Procurement Act 2013

  • Eastern African markets for women’s coffee and;

  • Routes into international markets for women’s Fairtrade-certified coffee


As the successful applicant you will be supported in these actions by Fairtrade Africa and join Fairtrade Africa in visiting Kipkelion Union to collect relevant data, conduct interviews and devise a strategy which is coherent with their vision and capabilities.


Role and responsibility: As the consultant for this work you will be responsible for:



  • Supporting Fairtrade Africa staff in planning three (3) days of consultation and information gathering with coffee groups and other stakeholders in Kipkelion, with a focus on information needed to develop marketing strategy

  • Participating in this visit in partnership with Fairtrade Africa staff

  • Completing a marketing strategy for Kipkelion Union, including market analysis.


Person specification:



  • Essential: Excellent knowledge of the Kenyan coffee sector and issues affecting smallholder farming cooperatives.

  • Essential: Demonstrable experience of developing marketing strategies for producer organisations/Unions through commercial and procurement routes.

  • Essential: Excellent communication skills and time management with the ability to create a compelling case in support of Fairtrade’s work in accordance with tight deadlines.

  • Essential: Experience in conducting consultation work with producers and/or producer groups.

  • Strongly desirable: Specialist knowledge of gender-sensitive interventions in agriculture.

  • Strongly desirable: Knowledge of Ethical Trade and Fairtrade in particular is an advantage


Timing and remuneration:



  • We are seeking a consultant to work for 14 days in total including preparation for a field visit, participation in field visit and subsequent development of marketing strategy content.


Preferred start date for preparation days is within the week beginning 31st March, 2014 with a field visit to Kipkelion planned for 7th April – 10th April, inclusive of travel to and from Nairobi.


Consultancy fee is 30,000 KES per day generating a total payment of 420,000 KES for 14 day’s work.
