Kenya Airways—the country’s national carrier has sought the services of an American firm, Spenser Stuart, in the search for a new CEO to replace outgoing boss Titus Naikuni.
The airline stated that Mr. Naikuni’s replacement should be a “business leader with experience in successfully driving aggressive and sustainable growth, managing complex capital intensive business and delivering operational and safety excellence.”
One of the criteria for the CEO position cited by Spenser Stuart includes familiarity in the aviation industry and African experience. This seems to outline the KQ’s commitment to carry on with solidifying its market in Africa. According to KQ’s records, Africa has been her mainstay over the years and accounts for over 52percent of its turnover.
Spenser Stuart on the other hand has previously recruited top executives for major global brands among them Yahoo. It also recruits board members as well as assesses their performance.
But what’s the likely motivation for sourcing overseas firms for hiring services while reputable local firms exist? “The calibre of the company seeking to get new employees on board matters in deciding to procure the services of a foreign recruiter,” says Martin Githaiga, Recruitment Consultant of Corporate Staffing Services.

“Moreover,” he says, “looking at the number of CEOs in Kenya who might fit the billing of KQ even when a headhunt is done you’ll come up with a handful. KQ seeking an external recruiter is a matter of trying to broaden the chances of getting more competent people for the job.”
On the other hand, Mr. Githaiga says, it might be in the public interest to get a local CEO; a source of national pride but at the same time having a foreign recruiter does not mean Kenyans are locked out of the recruitment. “Kenyan locals might still be shortlisted and even selected,” he says.
KQ’s new boss will be tasked with overseeing the implementation of the air carrier’s vision to increase destinations to 115 at the same time expand its fleet to 120 aircrafts by 2021.
The new CEO will also ensure the firm’s profitability is maintained even as it comes out of
