My Boss Harasses Everyone Apart From Me. Should I Be Worried?

How do I deal with a boss who is not harassing me?

By Elizabeth Benu

Any form of harassment in the office is always traumatizing to an employee or even the colleagues working with the victim. In a few cases there are those who never seem to fall victim to any harassment.

Elina Makena, has been working as an Audit Assistant at a firm in Nairobi, While her colleagues get harassed over and over again, she has never been harassed.

This is her story:

For the two years I have been working in this audit firm, I have seen people come and leave within two months because my boss is harassing them. This is not just a speculation because he was once sued for sexual harassment and managed to buy a lawyer and a judge. The poor lady was forced to drop the charges.

My boss is a middle aged man, perhaps in his late thirties and his harassment varies from sexual, gender, religion, skin color, physical appearance to age. All this he does easily and no matter how efficient and skillful you are, he will find a way to make you feel worthless. To rub salt on the wound, he never cares and when you threaten to sue him, he will laugh it off and continue with the harassment.

Should I be worried that my boss is not harassing me?

Out of the many cases I have come across, my boss has shared sexually inappropriate images with every receptionist in the company. He also goes to an extent of making sexual comments to all genders and purposefully brushing up against my female colleagues.

However, amidst all this I HAVE NEVER been harassed. I am too young to be enjoying success in my auditing career, I always dress well and I am beautiful. While everyone is complaining of discrimination I remain silent, trying to think of what to say.

Recently, one of my colleagues pointed out that I never get any bad comments about my age, tribe or how I look. She then added that I must be in a deal with the boss because they cannot understand why it does not happen to me.

Since I am not being harassed and everyone feels I am on the boss’s side, I am worried. Worried that one day he may decide to pounce on me while everyone is out of the office or that he has bigger harassment plans for me. I do not want to quit my Kshs.75, 000 job, but should I be worried that I am the only person my boss does not or has never harassed in the office for two years?

Please help.

What advice would you give Elina?
