Child Media Literacy Trainer

Internews Europe is an international media development organization that improves access to information and freedom of expression worldwide.


Internews Europe is launching a media development project focused on child rights in Kenya.


The project will support ‘traditional’ media outlets (TV, radio, newspapers) and use new media systems (websites, social media, and cell phones) to better communicate information on child rights issues, expand the public and policy debate, and amplify child and advocacy voices on child rights.


Internews Europe is looking for eleven (11) motivated staff members to implement the child rights media project.


Child Media Literacy Trainer

The Child Media Literacy Trainer will work with children on how to consume and use media.


S/he will be responsible for carrying out media training and media literacy activities with children and youth, prepare events and materials, and write reports on these activities.


Specific responsibilities:

Through partner CSOs, schools, and journalism clubs, design and deliver media activities empowering children and youth to consume media, tell their own stories, and use media as a tool in support of child rights.

Mentor children and youth groups to produce creative stories and publish them in various formats and media platforms (radio, photography, social media, video, newspaper etc.).

Organise regular feedback groups and events where children interact with journalists.

Establish partnerships and maintain strong relationships with partner institutions including schools and journalism club.


Qualifications:

BA in Journalism and/or Communication from a reputable journalism training institution.

Minimum of 5 years experience in a reputable Kenyan media outlet.

Experience training journalists or journalism students.


Skills:

Good knowledge on children and education issues specific to Kenya, with existing network of journalism clubs, schools, universities and youth groups.

Ability and passion to work with children and youth.

Excellent media production skills and social media skills.

Integrity, reliability and creativity.

Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
