By Dorcas Karauna,
With the changing economy and high rate of high unemployment today, a college education no longer guarantees you a job; not to mention a high-paying job. This has forced graduates to compete for the few jobs available with non- graduates.
In fact, according to a research published on Daily Mail in November 2013, “half of all young people who have graduated since the onset of the recession are now working in ‘non-graduate’ jobs.” It revealed that “many graduates are working as secretaries, carers or factory workers because they cannot find better-paid work.”
Universities are now so overpriced that graduates these days are leaving school with on average of Sh 180,000 in debt from HELB! The fact is that student loan debt has been a challenge for many to pay and has broken into billions of debt. What is the best choice, to secure a job that has good pay with no formal requirements or go after a career that needs a degree that may leave one in debt?
Whatever you go for here are a few excellent jobs which do not require a college degree.
Customer Care/ Service/ Receptionists – Customer Care jobs do not necessarily require you to have a degree. If you have good or call it impeccable communication skills, and a pleasant personality then this job would be ideal for you. In many cases, you will find companies conducting a phone interview even before they meet the face behind the voice. The work involves a lot of phone conversations, either within or intentionally depending on the company. Most companies prefer Diploma holders for this role. In an interview with The Edition Magazine; Safaricom CEO Bob Collymore revealed that, “Safaricom employs Diploma holders in their Customer Care department.”
Reporters – Do you have great listening and writing and communication skills? A job as a reporter could be in your future. In fact, Media houses in Kenya have a majority of reporters from Kenya Institute of Mass Communication. Later on, some progress to do their degrees and take up bigger roles in the institutions. Some of the leading media professionals in the industry include: Linus Kaikai – Managing Editor, NTV ; Ferdinand Omondi – Senior Reporter, KTN; Catherine Kasavuli – Royal Media Services and Emmanuel Talam – Director of Communication in the Deputy President’s Office (formerly KTN) among others.
Admin Assistants/ PA/ Secretaries– On this role, presentation and looks is everything on top of good communication skills. A degree is needed in performing these roles. I remember a time when one of the leading motor cycle manufacturing industries was recruiting a Personal Assistant required a beautiful lady, even before looking at your performance. And the search was very difficult since many candidates were rejected on the basis of looks.
Electrician – Electricians are not required to have a formal degree in fact the best trained ones are from technical colleges/ polytechnics. Electricians need to have an understanding in basic mathematics, safety, building codes, blueprints, and also electrical theory.
Auto mechanic/ technicians – This is a hands on career and has a high demand in the job market. To maximize your own chances of being one it is recommended that you undergo vocational training through polytechnics, or technical colleges. It will help to make your CV more marketable and indicates to your employers you have know-how and expertise in the field.
Drivers – Becoming a driver is a career which is ignored a lot. But some earn as high as Sh 35 000 – 45,000 based upon the type of work and who your employer is. For instance, drives for executive people in KRA and UN drivers earn not less than Sh 39,000.
Truck drivers are also highly paid based upon the type of truck you drive and who your employer is. Truck drivers are aimed at driving competence, having the ability to drive large trucks as well as being economical and trustworthy. You will need to receive a commercial driver license if you wish to drive heavy loads and CDL licenses are typically available at most trade schools.
Sales Agent/ Executive/ Representative
A sales job is not for the faint hearted. If you are strong willed and patient, outspoken, tough negotiator, then this job is ideal for you. In sales you earn what you’re worth, not a cent more. You do not need a formal education to be a salesperson- you need a brass personality and thick skin. Infrequent pay checks, constant rejection and an almost immediate repulsion from anyone you let know you’re in sales are just a few of the givens of the profession.
