By Mark Namaswa,
Kenya’s fastest growing bank has secured the services of three new expatriates in the latest round of executive appointments. This means the entry of three out of four new executive hires at Equity Bank— Enrico Nora, General Manager-Mobile Banking, Ron Reddick, Executive Director-Services and Raphael Hukai, Chief Information Officer might be signalling the bank’s shift from its previous policy of hiring Kenyan executives from multinationals in the diaspora.
Equity’s number of expat executives has now risen to a total of five, including the current Head of Investment, Jumaane Tafawa and John Staley, the Chief Finance Officer. While Mr. Nora joins the bank from NTT DOCOMO-Japan’s top mobile operator Mr. Hukai previously worked as the executive architect for IBM for close to 16 years.
Announcing the appointments, Equity’s COE James Mwangi said, “We are not timid to go in the global market to look for people to help us exploit our competencies and we are now a global bank.” The only non-expat in the latest staff acquisitions is Mr. Reuben Mbindu, the new Human Resources Manager, who was sourced from Standard Chartered Bank where he served in a similar capacity.
Equity’s rise over the past decade has been steered mainly by low-end market borrowers to become the largest in Kenya in customer client base as well as second -only to Kenya Commercial Bank- in terms of assets . And with human capital becoming increasingly vital in its operations, and business ideas being copied across the board, the quest for talent in the banking industry has never been greater. And Equity’s response has been characterized by the hiring executives from multinational firms with a bias in IT.
Other local banks, on the contrary, have tended to stick to local executives including KCB, Co-operative Bank and Barclays Bank. NIC Bank and National Bank too, have shown preference for Kenyan executives, but those from the diaspora.
