Residents of Kapsabet town were treated to an early morning drama when a group of skimpily dressed sales women were attacked by a crowd.
The young women, who were marketing products of a mobile phone service provider, had just alighted from the bus before the incensed mob attacked them.
“Mmevaa nini hii?” (What are you wearing?), exclaimed a bewildered hawker. “Ni kadi mnauza ama ni kazi zingine mnafanya?” (Are you selling cards or conducting other fishy business?), questioned a passer-by.
A woman hawker is said to have raised the attention of fellow hawkers and passers-by after she was offended by the indecently dressed women. The mob surged forward threatening to strip the women naked.
The young saleswomen took to their heels and headed to a nearby salon to take cover, with the crowd hot in pursuit.
They were rescued by a group of other women who sympathized and pleaded with the mob to forgive the salesgirls, terming them “ignorant” and perhaps, “new in the town.”
“This should serve as a lesson to companies that send young girls here. They should respect the cultures of people in different towns. Such dressing may be acceptable in Nairobi but completely offensive in smaller towns,” said Remmy, a witness.
