The integrity of education in public universities could be compromised if male lecturers continue to award questionable marks and certificates to female students in exchange for sex says Mumo Matemu, Chairman of the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission.
According to Mr. Matemu, sexual exploitation was still a common practice in public universities adding that EACC was pushing for a review of the educational curriculum to include integrity and good governance lessons in universities and other institutions of learning. Mr. Matemu also disclosed that public universities were also ranked eighth among the most corrupt public institutions in the country.
“Corruption in our universities is very rampant and as the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission, we are trying to penetrate the universities and engage students in graft talks and review the curriculum to include integrity and anti-corruption lessons,” he said. Graft in public institutions, he said, starts right from the selection of courses to the admission of students.
Speaking at Pwani University on Wednesday during a seminar on integrity and leadership in universities, Mr. Matemu added that proposed curriculum reviews were aimed at enhancing character transformation among learners. Persistent allegations and incidents of sex-for-grades in Kenyan universities have not only cast higher education in bad light but also raised credibility issues on the authenticity of certificates and grades acquired from the institutions.
