Purpose of the Job
The job holder is responsible for reviewing individual applications of customers, agents and participants for insurance policies, for all classes of insurance, whereby s/he evaluates the degree of risk involved and suggests recommendations on acceptance or rejection of the applications at the branch.
Responsibilities:
- The insurance underwriter is responsible for analyzing different financial, medical and other necessary documents to determine the degree of risk from factors like the financial condition of the applicant, the value and condition of his property
- S/he has to decline excessive risks
- After examining the documents he has to write to field representatives, medical personnel, participants, agents and other experts to get additional information, quote rates, and explain the company’s underwriting rules
- S/he has to evaluate the possibility of losses due to catastrophe or excessive insurance
- In case the risk is substandard, he can decrease the value of policy, give rating to ensure safe profitable distribution of risks
- He needs to review company records to analyze the amount of insurance in force on single risk or group of closely related risks
- S/he is also responsible for authorizing reinsurance of policy when risk is high.
- General supervision of underwriting and customer service staff at the branch.
- Provide technical guidance and support to staff, intermediaries and clients
- Preparation of regular management reports on production, business mix and other relevant reports and ratios.
- Providing continuous staff training to create capacity.
- Control of debts and creditors by ensuring strict adherence to the company credit policy.
- Observing and complying with reinsurance treaties, including compulsory cessions.
- Establish procedures for surveys, initiating risk management programmes and compliance with recommendations on risk improvement.
- Developing among staff loyalty to the company, personal integrity, adequate professional standards and a sense of satisfaction in the performance of their work.
- Any other duties as may be assigned from time to time.
