Whenever bribe-taking is mentioned in Kenya, traffic policemen often come to mind but count out Corporal David Chumo.
He was recently feted by the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) and the Kenya Forest Service (KFS)for his relentless efforts to abide by the law despite the many tempting brides by lawbreakers that have come his way.
In January last year, he nabbed a matatu driver ferrying approximately 840 kg of giraffe meat and turned down a Ksh 30,000 inducement he was offered.
Again in July last year around Maasai Mara Game Reserve, he bumped into another load of giraffe meat destined for Burma Market and turned down a Ksh 60,000 bribe.
In January this year, he again arrested four people caught ferrying charcoal without a license and fined them Ksh 50,000 each.
Narok County Ecosystem Conservator, James Mburu consequently wrote Mr. Chumo’s recommendation to the Inspector-General of police.
“His dedication has contributed greatly towards conservation and this officer should be rewarded for these achievements,” he said in the letter.
Early this month, Mr. Chumo was recognised by both the Kenya Forest Service and the Kenya Wildlife Service for his efforts.
