By Mark Namaswa,
The creativity with which employers and human resource professionals frame questions is amazing. The motive might be asking about a fairly common subject but under the pressure of the interview, what is so plain obvious might not be the case to a candidate
How do you respond to: Tell me three things that make you the most suitable Candidate for this job?
“From the nature of the question, you can tell that it is testing you on three fronts; your confidence level, your personal abilities and your understanding of the job,” responds Carol Mwangi, HR Crown Beverages. “And this belongs to the group of impromptu questions which often take people by surprise. The best way to respond is by first demonstrating your ability to deliver on the job,” she advises.
“And this is done by directing your focus on the roles you will be undertaking and focusing the three aspects looked at during the hiring process: qualifications, work experience and personal attributes that fit the role,” she says. “There’s no formula on which one to begin with unless asked. The most important thing is being able to execute your response in a clear, confident manner.
1. Personal Attributes:
“Mostly this question will not come as the first one but if t does, your ability to answer will demonstrate how fast you can think, respond and adapt to new environments and challenges which is a plus,” says Liza Shaka, HR Manager – The Monarch Insurance. “You will be able to set the pace even for other candidates who will be interviewed after you.”
“At the end of the day,” adds Ms. Carol Mwangi, “it matters a lot how well you will be able to explain yourself while exuding confidence. While it is not entirely possible for one to be fully prepared for all interview questions, the best way is to prepare as much as possible.
One of the methods for preparation I can advocate for includes conducting online searches for the most common as well as difficult questions to expect.”
2. Work Experience:
“This depends on what the job you are being interviewed for is demanding,” says Ms Mwangi. “You can say: ‘I believe I’m the best person suited for this job going by my previous experience in company ‘A’ where I executed the same role and attained a good amount of successes’. While explaining your working experience,” she says, “be sure to have gone through your CV well in advance so you can be able to explain any question in that direction flawlessly.”
According to Ms. Shaka, stating what you can bring onboard is very important and this can be done by closely referring to what the job advertisement asked for.
3. Academic Qualifications:
While explaining this, Ms. Mwangi advises that the most important thing is outlining how your qualifications have prepared you to execute tasks in line with the job you are being interviewed for.
“Mention your academic and technical skills and how they come in to give you an edge in performing the new roles,” adds Ms. Shaka. She also says understanding the roles and work dynamics of the potential company also aids a candidate to better respond to questions I an interview.
How can this preparation be done?
“Do mock interviews with friends and colleagues as a way of developing confidence in approaching interviews,” Ms Shaka says.
As Ms. Mwangi points out: “It is better to be as prepared as possible to minimize the risk of running into surprises during interviews. Some people are able to cruise through interviews not because they knew much more than the rest of the team, but just because they were able to display a good amount of confidence.”
