Kenyans both in the diaspora and back home jumped for joy as the country’s First Lady Margaret Kenyatta went down history books by conquering the 42 km stretch at the 2014 London Marathon. She was able to complete the herculean feat on Sunday clocking a time of 7 hours and 4 minutes as the country’s athletes Wilson Kipsang and Edna Kiplagat emerged winners in both men’s and women categories.
Pounding the track in a team of eight, the first lady was cheered on by jubilant Kenyans who travelled from every city in Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales to line up the marathon route which also spots some of England’s most iconic sites.
Aside from finishing the race, the sole goal of her participation was raising funds for setting up maternal health clinics in Kenya in an attempt to eliminate infant mortality in the country. The country’s President Uhuru Kenyatta was among the elated spectators who welcomed the First Lady at the finish line.
