Not Again! Kenyan Labour Minister’s Degree Deemed To Be Fake

Outspoken Labour Cabinet Secretary Kambi Kazungu’s educational qualifications have once again been put to question in court barely two weeks to Labour Day.

On Tuesday, Lawyer Samuel Aduda representing a petitioner, Charles Omwanga, told the court that Mr. Kambi’s performance had raised questions on the authenticity of his credentials which he claims to have acquired from Baraton University.

“The Cabinet Secretary has on numerous occasions failed to articulate on issues relating to his docket as would be expected of a university graduate,” Mr. Aduda said. He added that Kambi’s numerous erratic decisions were likely to run aground the sensitive labour docket.

Mr. Omwenga, through the court, is attempting to compel Minister Kambi to produce his university degree. However, the Attorney-General’s office has come to the rescue of Mr. Kambi urging the court to dismiss the case on grounds that the petition was misconceived and based on speculation which amounted to abuse of the court.

“The issue of a degree certificate can be dealt with by the Higher Education cabinet secretary. The petitioner is avoiding a certain procedure,” said the AG.

According to the AG, the Constitution lays down the procedure under which a cabinet secretary can be dismissed. The AG added that a degree is not a requirement under the Constitution for an individual to be appointed to the docket of a cabinet secretary.

Minister Kambi joins the ranks of Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho who has also had his Ugandan degree question on numerous occasions. Judgment on Kambi’s case will be passed next month.
