More than 300,000 people making a living on agricultural activities in Kiambu County are staring at a bleak future thanks to the roaring real estate development business taking over the area.

According to a new survey, population pressure fuelled by real estate development is quickly eating up agricultural land in a county that has in the past flourished mainly thanks to cash crops, horticulture, emerging livestock and fisheries.

Agriculture alone, reports The Daily Nation, contributes to 17.4 percent of the county’s income and the number of livelihoods at stake is substantial. And real estate, it turns out, is not the only threat to one of the county’s chief economic mainstays—the high cost of inputs and minimal agricultural technical know-how—is also to blame for the dwindling agricultural potential.

Lately, the area has witnessed tremendous real estate investments with farmers finding the venture more lucrative than the traditional cash crop business. And the demand for housing driven up by students of tertiary institutions has seen a number of big land owners dump traditional cash crops like coffee in favour of setting up housing units.

Consequently, the county has resorted to put in place measures to safeguard its enormous potential for the future which include zoning off agricultural and real estate development areas in an attempt to make agriculture a more attractive venture.
