Job Search Tips: 4 Ways How To Apply For Jobs Which Are Not Advertised

By Florence Mukunya,

Kenneth Kariuki is an Accounts graduate from KCA University. He has been searching for a job in the local dailies and on line job sites but he says via an email that he is not able to get the type of job he wants.

“I have been looking in the various adverts in news papers and the job sites in Kenya but I have not found the job I want. All the jobs I find require many years of experiences than I have. I was thinking of making applications in a few companies with an accounts department, the problem is that they have not advertised for openings, how do I go about it?”

“People make job applications that have not been advertised all the time, the trick is to know how to introduce yourself on the letter,” says Janet Thiong’o a HR Officer at Outrival HR

Does this method of making applications work?

“Yes, some companies store this data in their data base if they do not have a vacant position by the time the applicant makes his/her application. When an opportunity comes they use the information and shortlist from there instead of advertising for the opening,” confirms Ms Thiong’o

Whom do you address for the job?

Ms Thiong’o says that, “To apply for jobs that do not have instructions on whom to address, just address it to the Hr as normally they handle the hiring matters but you can go further and research on the appropriate person to address the application to.”

How do go about the process of applying for jobs that are not advertised for?

First, Ms. Thiong’o advises that, “Go straight to your key competencies since you don’t have the option of mentioning where you got the job advert.”

Secondly, “Try as much as possible to keep your application letter as brief as possible. This is because nobody wants to read through a very long document especially if they were not expecting one. Remember, you are making an application that in the first place was not advertised,” adds Ms. Thiong’o

Thirdly , “Tweak your CV to fit the company. This is done by researching on the company and noting on the culture of the company. Then make your CV fit the company and make it catchy for the person who receives it. This is for him /her to want to read the CV even when they know they have not advertised for any jobs,” Ms Thiong’o asserts

Fourth, Ms. Thiong’o cements that, “Make clear the sort of work you are seeking. This is very important because if the company has not advertised for a job it’s hard for the employer to know the exact job you are applying for if it’s not indicated on the cover letter or the subject line of the email.”

Lastly, find out the name and the title of the appropriate person, Ms Thiong’o says that, “Going an extra mile and finding out the name of the person to address for the job as opposed to a general application ‘to the Hr’ shows that you not just an ordinary job seeker. This might just get the attention of the addressed personnel.”

For job seekers looking to apply for jobs that have not been advertised and have been wondering how to do it, you now have the answers.
