7 Things That Will Get You The Promotion You Deserve

By Elizabeth Benu

Do you feel you need a more challenging position in your company? Do you want to move up the corporate ladder? If you have answered yes to both questions, here are 7 things to do to get a promotion you deserve

Benson Ng’ang’a, a Human Resource Officer at Bata shoe company, says that for a promotion you need to show your need for it through your actions. With that he gives the following tips:

1. Improve your code of conduct and competence

These are important things that say a lot about your personality. How is your disciplinary record? For example if you have several warnings for coming late you wouldn’t expect to land a promotion.

2. Learning new skills

These skills can be educational or work experience related and this makes you more qualified for a promotion. If someone is on leave and you are asked to hold on for them, accept gladly. It is a way of increasing the work experience.

3. Interact with the people in higher positions and let them know about your work.

This is important because when an opportunity comes up you will be considered. Build relations with those who can support you and influence decision of getting you promoted. How you interact with senior management helps a lot because they are the ones to give great referrals

Being there for them also makes it likely that they will be there for you too.

4. Improve your Work behavior and competence

Ask yourself why you are asking for a promotion? Does your behavior match up to the promotion you are eyeing? If you are the co-worker who sits around gossiping and doing nothing at work it will not reflect well to your boss.

5. Excel at your current position

You have to give the best performance at your current position. Being promoted comes with new responsibilities which need excellent performance levels. Therefore before you start seeking a promotion, do well in your current job, without too much bother. So, when your boss sees you working well effortlessly, they may wonder what more you are capable of doing.

6. Be Willing to work

If a team member needs your help, be sure to help them out. Even though it is not your job, a little help goes a long way. Colleagues will most likely support the person who has supported them in the past.

7. Ask for it

If you have truly held up to your end, request for that promotion.

“The most important thing is to check on your competence and how well you use your skills,” concludes Mr. Ng’ang’a
