Meet Young Entrepreneur Making Good of His Diploma Instead of Saying “Hakuna Kazi”

By Jane Okoth.

The level of unemployment is up and not showing any signs of slowing down, talk about the famous sentiments of every kenyan… ‘hakuna kazi’.

I recently spoke to Gagi Isaya, the founder of globe multimedia, a company that deals with video coverage events about his long search for employment and how he resorted to being an entrepreneur.

1. Tell us about your job search.

My job search has been the longest. I completed college in 2011 and have been looking for a job ever since. However, I have also been engaged in a bit of side hustling because I needed to survive you know.

2. What kind of jobs have you been looking for?

I was looking for any job as long as it was related to journalism and public relations. This is because I believed I could do something better with communication.

3. Tell us about your level of education

I have a diploma in journalism and mass communication from the Kenya Institute of Professional Studies.

4. What was your childhood dream?

While growing up in Mfangano Island in Homabay County, I always had the desire to become a renowned journalist. I always aspired to be the Fred Obach Machoka.

5. Is what you are doing today aligned to your passion?

I came to later learn that journalism was broad and much more than what I was thinking. I got an attachment at Ganda Multimedia where I used to go for field work doing video coverage and editing. There was when the idea and passion regenerated.

I then decided to create my own job instead of looking for one. After much brainstorming, I came up with the idea of Globe Multimedia.

I got my first job in Migori where I had to hire equipments such as cameras because I did not have any. I wanted to market myself so I was not looking for the money part of it at first.

It was my motivation because after that someone contacted me for music editing and that is how my company grew.

6. How much do you make?

I cannot disclose the amount but I can assure you that it is very promising. I have been able to acquire most equipment for my job and even gotten many job assignments. I am now in the process of partnering with an international company called Dove Creations.

7. What challenges are you facing so far

The biggest one is financial. I have employed only 2 people and we are still a company that is growing up.

We do not have the capability to do serious advertising though I sometimes do it on face book and also on OLX.

8. What is your advice to job seekers out there?

I want to tell them that seeking a job is not a bad thing but it is better to create one for yourself.

Someone who has gone to school has the ability to do so. I want to advice the young people to not be sitting down waiting for jobs.

Of course you do not expect everybody to give you thumbs up when u introduce your idea but always believe in yourself.

9. Do you plan to continue with the job search?

I am looking for a place where I can gain more skills and experience so as to have a vast knowledge about how a big Multimedia company is run.
