CV Writing Tips: “Do Lecturers Make Good Referees?”

CV Writing Tips on Referess

By Jane Okoth,

Choosing the right person on your references can determine your chances of getting the job or not.

For the last six months, Tobius Opiyo has been applying for multiple jobs without much luck. But one incident was a wake up call that he might be doing something wrong with his application.

“I had applied for a Network Administrator Job where I included one of my lecturers as a referee on my CV. When he was contacted, he denied being my Tutor but later called back and apologized for the misunderstanding. However, I still feel like that was the reason behind not being considered for the job.

Do lecturers make good referees, especially in a case where they do not seem to remember you?” he asks in an email.

Answer
Florence Mukunya, a Career Advisor at Corporate Staffing Services says that a lecturer can make a good referee only if you are a fresh graduate with little or no working experience.

To avoid a scenario like Mark, Ms Mukunya advises that it is good etiquette to ask for your lecturer’s permission to act as your referee before giving his name to a potential employer.

“He should be an individual with whom you interacted with a lot to a point where he actually remembers you,” she says.

A lecturer is the best person to comment on your academic results as well as your personal attributes and leadership roles, a skill most employers are looking for.

For those with working experience, Ms Mukunya says that you do not need to include your lecturer because chances are he might not be relevant at that point. Instead, include your immediate supervisor or your former employee who can comment on your work relations and ethics.

Your referees are very important in the job searching process as well as in your career so make the right choice.
