Unemployed? 5 Things You Should Be Doing From Now

Fifty percent of job seekers tend to apply for jobs they are not qualified for. With the fierce competition in the job market the response is always disappointing.

Put your time in good use by doing the following:

1. Volunteer

This may increase your chances of being hired since you will keep your skills fresh while enhancing your resume. Volunteer in an area relevant to your profession.

2. Keep Your Skills Current

In situations where you lack the skills required for a job, put in effort in learning the skills. The Internet has provided a platform where you can learn practically everything. For those who already possess the necessary skills put it into practice.

3. Network

Ensure that you either reconnect with your old contacts or form new ones. Reconnecting might mean contacting professors, college advisers, and internship supervisors, or it might mean getting in touch with old colleagues, bosses, and business acquaintances.

For new contacts, try going to networking events sponsored by various institutions. You can even consider going for community meetings, it’s an opportunity to meet people with similar interests.

4. Freelance

Try doing some freelancing jobs; it is a great way to boost your skills, resume, portfolio, professional network, income, and confidence.

5. Build An Online Presence

Go online. Start a blog, work on your social network profiles; create an online portfolio to showcase your work. Find companies you’re interested in working for, subscribe to their blogs, and follow them on Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter. You might impress your potential employer.
