Segal Family Foundation – Program Officer
Location – Based in Kampala for first 4 – 6 months; Thereafter potential to be based in Rwanda or Burundi; 50% travel within East & West Africa
Organization Overview:
The Segal Family Foundation (SFF) supports over 160 non-profit organizations working in Sub Saharan Africa to solve the continent’s most challenging development challenges. SFF provides not only financial support but also has a growing program of capacity building services for its grantees. The Foundation currently has eight full-time staff, including three staff in Africa.
Position Overview:
SFF seeks a French-speaking Program Officer to support Africa-side operations including: programmatic and regional networks, capacity building programming, due diligence of potential grantees, and general administrative tasks.
Reports to: Director of Operations
Duties & Responsibilities
- Manage Programmatic and Regional Networks
- Assist in planning health and youth workshops
- Manage logistics of health and youth workshops
- Contribute to Facebook, list-serve, and file-sharing for health and youth networks
- Manage planning and logistics of regional dinners 30% Support Capacity Building (Targeted Capacity Support)
- Assist with, and eventually conduct, capacity assessments for Francophone SFF grantees
- Build a database of quality Francophone consultants based in East Africa (across the areas of strategic planning, financial management, fundraising, and M&E)
- Manage tracking and support to grantees in the TCS program
- Occasionally provide on-site support to SFF grantees 30% Due Diligence of Potential Grantees
- Assist with vetting applications of potential grantees
- Organize scheduling and logistics of site visits
- Conduct site visits and provide funding recommendations 30% Administrative Tasks
- Coordinate logistics of visits from peer organizations
- Assist with planning and execution of annual meeting
- Maintain site visits notes and partner files
- Track budgets for Africa-side programming
- Other tasks as needed
Qualifications:
- Written and spoken fluency in English (required)
- Proficiency in French, (required)
- Swahili, Kinyarwanda or local language (preferred)
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel (required)
- Bachelor’s degree in social work, nonprofit management, business or other related field (required)
- Master’s degree in public administration, business administration, public health, or social work (preferred)
- Experience working with grassroots nonprofit organizations in Sub-Saharan Africa
- Background in monitoring and evaluation
- Basic understanding accounting and financial management
- Ability to work and travel independently
- Detail-oriented with willingness to both coordinate large events and complete administrative tasks
- Strong writing ability
