‘You want to make some quick extra cash for the holiday!!!!!!’ This is a title of a job advert by Nation Media Group sent to Career Point that caught my attention. I know that people want to make some money on the side over the holidays and this is definitely a good opportunity from a well established media house.
Part time jobs are not strange scenarios in large organizations. Nation Media Group Business Development Manager, Onesmus Muli explains that, “part-time jobs come in handy to help sort out this short-term goals for the organization.”
So why do organizations hire part timers? “Labour being a major input in any market is scarce and costly especially with the Kenyan market, hence for economic prowess in any organization, part time jobs go an extra mile in achieving this; it’s seen as more cost-effective.” Mr Onesmus further adds that, “it’s a tool that can be effectively be used to get new ideas in the business and market with exchange of income to the part-timers.”
Most of the time, companies offer part time jobs in an effort to meet specific goals or carry out short term projects. I am sure people in the sales industry or even clothes and shoe vendors will take a few extra employees to work over the holidays just to boost sales.
According to Mr. Onesmus, part time jobs are beneficial to both the employer and the staff. The part timers generate extra income for themselves, acquire necessary skills (planning, communication, organizational) and are prepared for any opportunities in and out of the organization. For the organization, they are able to achieve both long and short term goals earlier or within the specified period.
A part time job is no joke; you have to produce immediate results. Mr. Onesmus said they are looking for “Individuals who can be able to deliver the expected results within a specified time; beat deadlines and can cushion pressure. Since the individual are neutral, they need to show case how things can be done differently from the traditional way they find in any organization.”
Do part timers have prospects of permanent jobs? “Yes and No!” Mr Onesmus explains that, “Yes because, through their achievements and the input they bring on-board, we are able to measure the ability of each and every other person. In the event that opportunities come up, they are eligible for consideration depending on one’s hard work.”
For those willing to take the Nation Media Job offer ensure that you are swift and time conscious. “Newspapers are FMCG’s and above that they have a high perishable life cycle hence the need for delivery to the customers on time,” Mr Onesmus explains.
On the duration of the job Mr. Onesmus indicated that, “It’s a project started earlier this year and it’s an on-going process with infinity hence our engagement between us and them is a long-term one with renewal of contracts after expiry.”
Always remember, “Success can only be achieved through having the right attitude, practicing patience and an honesty policy in life!!” Mr. Onesmus.
