Axed NSSF Boss Gets Top Job @Kenya Airways: Lessons ON Getting A Job After Being Fired

By Dorcas Karuana,

Just a few months after the former National Social Security Fund (NSSF) managing trustee, Tom Odongo lost his job in a humiliating; fired and replaced manner, he is now all smiles as Kenya Airways has appointed him for yet another job.

Business Daily reports that, “Tom Odongo has been appointed as the head of business development to help develop new projects that will cut costs and improve services at the national carrier.” This position will report to chief executive, Titus Naikuni.

Confirming his appointment as a short term contract, Kenya Airways CEO, Titus Naikuni said, “Mr Odongo will be working on a number of projects we have in the pipeline, and once he delivers he will leave.”

Although Mr Naikuni and Mr Odongo served on the board of East Africa Portland Cement, he (Naikuni) disclosed to Business Daily that, “Mr. Odongo was hired after a successful interview.”

What lessons can you learn from this?

Acknowledging that getting fired isn’t an ideal situation to ever be in, Martin Githaiga, Human Resource Officer at Corporate Staffing Services says “it’s certainly a situation that can be dealt with strategically so that you get back into the workforce again quickly, with a minimum of discomfort.”

Breneen Maloba Principal Human Resources Officer at Seven Seas Technologies agrees that being fired is not the end of the world. Do not have self pity but instead have a positive mindset and give your best in trying to get another job. “Re-evaluate the things that got you fired, recollect and rebrand yourself and then move forward with clarity of thought,” advises Mr. Maloba.

However, Mr. Maloba notes that, “when you are fired form a senior level position; it may be difficult to get a job at the same level.” Getting a new job from outside the market is difficult that when you are already working.

Mr. Maloba recommends that, those hired from senior level positions need to do a SWOT analysis and get to know their Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats. “If your weakness is for instance communication, then you can enroll for classes even online ones, to improve on this.” On the other hand, “if its lack of being updated with current affairs, one can join professional forums attend career fairs and ensure you are visible as well as your brand stands out.” He advocates this will help you network actively with clarity of thought on where you are going and what you want.

Additionally, Mr. Githaiga advocates networking as the best method to use in getting a new job. “People who know you very well are likely to defend you and give your real character even if you are fired form a job.” This is how Mr Odongo got his job offer at Kenya Airways, having worked on the same board with Titus Naikuni, who probably knows him too well.

Moreover, one can use your references to defend you. “If you can find several former colleagues or management-level staff who can give a reference and positively explain your departure, you’ll be one step closer in your job search,” says Mr Githaiga.

He concludes by cautioning that one should be prepared for losing out on some job opportunities. “The reality is that some potential employers will shy away from you when they find out you were fired and the reason behind it.” In some cases, you might not be able to avoid this if the employer doesn’t have an open mind or if the reason you were fired was very serious.
