By Mark Namaswa,
Has it occurred to you that after an interview that went superbly well, you didn’t get the call? For many young Kenyan job seekers this situation is very real and happens many times.
On the other hand, ask around, it is not entirely unusual to hear about friends who got a phone call informing them of the good news of success after an interview in which they felt the panel literally tore them apart with tough questions.
Though not 100 percent fool-proof, here are some indicators that you interview likely was a success. Take a look:
1. When the interview became a Conversation rather than a Q & A Session
According to Martin Githaiga, HR Consultant – Corporate Staffing Services, an interview a candidate can bank his hopes on will depend on how the exchange took place.
“If it took the form of a discussion that is a good indicator of an interview well done,” he says, “as opposed to a question and answer session.”
Having a conversation with the panelists, he points out, is a good sign that tells the interview was likely a success as opposed to a ‘grilling’ session.
2. Duration of the interview: Longer might mean Better
In Mr. Githaiga’s opinion, one way of knowing the interview panel was interested in you can be deduced from the duration they spend with you in the interview room. He says: “If it didn’t last long then very likely you didn’t ignite their interest in what you were saying or offering so they would opt to be done with you as fast as possible.”
On the other hand, he points out that it is not unusual for an interviewer to directly tell the candidate that he was successful.
3. The panel shows interest in your performance indicators
Beth Wanjira, Client Service and Recruitment Officer, Corporate Staffing Services says when the panel seems interested in what you have been doing, then likely your interview went on well.
“Getting the panel to the level of showing interest in what you do and tracking your performance trends can be a good way of telling the interview went on well,” she says, “more so if you proved with your information that you could hit and even exceed set targets then you likely had a good one.”
4. Favourable Facial Expressions and Body Language
“You can use the face language of the interviewers in the panel, body language and tell whether all is going on well or not; just the way you do in normal conversations. It is not foolproof, however and there’s no guarantee you read them right or wrong,” says Diana Mmboga HR Officer, Standard Group.
“Nodding is another way that can be relied upon in telling whether as a candidate you are on the right track or not. When the panel nods, know you are treading on the right path,” Ms. Beth Wanjira says.
“In some cases, if you do exceedingly well, the interviewer might even offer you a handshake. It is one sure indicator I know of so far,” she says.
Well, consider these four as possible signs of success but other factors outside your control will also play part in determining your success. Some of these factors, according to Ms. Mmboga include affirmative action which may favour other candidates from minorities, gender balance, as well as the consensus that will be reached by the panel after the interview.
